The child maketh the man - a truism on two levels.
As adults we are shaped by the experiences of our childhood
just as the history of our forefathers shapes our lives
and the world around us.
This is the premise of Ethna Brogan's work, from relaying
Celtic folklore tales of magical fairy trees and landscapes
from her rural childhood, to the Family tree wall-hangings
often commissioned as family heirlooms and the contemporary
textile art with abstract origins from the Book of Kells
to the Ogham inscriptions of her Celtic forefathers.
Ethna Brogan is recognised as being one of Northern
Ireland's leading contemporary textile artists producing
sophisticated pieces steeped in cultural significance.
